Disclosure: My family was invited to attend Mary Poppins Returns at the El Capitan Theatre for free. All opinions are my own.
In Disney’s MARY POPPINS RETURNS, an all-new original musical and sequel, Mary Poppins is back to help the next generation of the Banks family find the joy and wonder missing in their lives following a personal loss. Emily Blunt stars as the practically-perfect nanny with unique magical skills who can turn any ordinary task into an unforgettable, fantastic adventure and Lin-Manuel Miranda plays her friend Jack, an optimistic street lamplighter who helps bring light—and life—to the streets of London.
El Capitan Theater
Mary Poppins Returns is NOW IN THEATERS, but we were invited to attend a special fan event at El Capitan Theater in Hollywood! If you haven’t been to a movie at El Capitan, you need to go at least once in your life. It is located right on Hollywood Boulevard across the street from the Dolby Theater and Mann’s Chinese Theater. Public parking is conveniently located across the street at Hollywood & Highland shopping center, AND El Capitan offers validation.
Seeing movies, especially Disney movies, is a full experience at El Capitan because they always have something special on display from the movie. Upon entry, you can take a special “Lamplighter” photo and try your hand at lighting the lamp just like Jack from the movie. Be sure to go downstairs to view the gorgeous costumes and props on display. On both levels of the theatre, costume designer Sandy Powell curated modernized Disney Styles from Trunk Club–I was so shocked that I was wearing the same shoes that I made LittleGray snap a photo for proof that I have an ounce of fashion sense.
Before the show, the famous organist plays on the stage until its time for the new crystal curtain show. The only way to describe this experience is gorgeous, and if you look closely, you might even get a glimpse of Mary Poppins! This is also the only place to get the exclusive Mary Poppins Umbrella popcorn bucket. You can get tickets to the El Capitan on their website (I definitely recommend getting balcony tickets!).
If you are a Mary Poppins fan, this is a must see. I might be getting soft with nostalgia, but there were several times that I got choked up just because I remember how much the original Mary Poppins movie meant to Walt Disney. I loved how there were nods to the original movie and the special cameos were my favorite part. All of the songs were new original songs, and if you’re a fan of Lin-Manuel Miranda you will not be disappointed. His signature rapping riffs definitely make an appearance! With that being said, this is 100% a musical, so if musicals aren’t your thing, be forewarned! Luckily, the Mary Poppins Returns soundtrack is available to purchase on digital, physical and streaming outlets.
Luckily, the girls and I LOVE musicals so it kept their attention throughout the entire film. I loved the little nods back to the original (the animated scene–and costumes–was my favorite!) and I’m still processing how it was the same, but still completely new and fun. The biggest takeaway from this movie for me was how Mary Poppins blurs the lines from imagination and reality, and how I can apply that to my every day life. She will teach you how to be a self sufficient problem solver by trying to think out of the box without limitations, which is definitely a life lesson that I hope the girls will learn.
